How effective is brute forcing? For example will cracking a 128 Bit AES really take 149,745,258,842,898 years? even on a fast modern computer?

At this moment brute forcing absolutely ineffective for long keys. As you have said, it will take 150E12 years to break 128 bit key. You will spend abnormal amount of energy to achieve your aimQuote:

I don't know how most modern brute force algorithms work, but if I started using non-ascii passwords do you think the amount of time would increase exponentially?
I expect a lot of programs don't even consider it.
Quantum computers could possibly break a lot of these encryption algorithms very quickly. We may have them in 10 or 20 years.
